OUR STORY

Mathare River Regeneration Network is composed of organised grassroots, youth and women groups working to manage wa​ste and the general environment along the Mathare River, that runs through Mathare, Korogocho, Huruma and Lucky Summer. The Network works with park initiatives along the river and aims to create safe green public spaces as well as educate the community on waste management and environmentalism. 

MRRN is steered by the top officials from the executive organizations. All the decisions made by the steering committee is made transparent to the other organizations and their input taken into consideration for inclusive decision  making and transparency.

MISSION

To rehabilitate the Mathare river and its surrounding environments, fostering a clean, healthy, and inclusive community space that enhances the well-being of Mathare river residents


VISION

A thriving self sustaining Mathare river ecosystem that serves as a model for urban river restoration and community empowerment, inspiring similar initiatives across Kenya and beyond.

OUR GOAL

To mobilize, engage, and facilitate individuals, organized groups, and stakeholders to actively participate in the restoration and maintenance of the Mathare River and its surrounding environment, while enhancing livelihood opportunities.

EXECUTIVE ORGANIZATION


Mto Wangu Initiative

It is a community led organization that focuses on climate change and lilihood restoration through waste management and restoration of the Mathare River, rehabilitation of riparian zones to green recreational spaces within Mathare. This initiative builds the resilience of women and youth as the direct beneficiaries to better adapt to climate change in Mathare slums.   

Luckysummer Environmental & Waste Management Organization (LEWMO)

It is a community-driven initiative based in Luckysummer, Nairobi, Kenya. Founded by Alvin Ochieng Omondi, LEWMO brings together youth groups within the Lucky Summer ward to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable waste management. Their efforts include waste reduction, recycling, and environmental education.

Youthprinua

It is a youth-led organization based in Baba Dogo, Nairobi, Kenya. Comprising innovative and talented members, Youthprinua focuses on youth empowerment, environmental conservation, art and talent, sanitation, health, and hygiene. Most of its members hail from the informal settlements in Nairobi, where they work to make a positive impact on their communities  

KOMB Green

It is a community-based organization founded in 2017 and located in Korogocho, Nairobi, Kenya.  The organization’s mission is to create green and safe spaces along the Nairobi River.  In 2017, young people in Korogocho faced challenges related to crime and safety. They mobilized others to transform the dumpsite next to the Dandora bridge and along the Nairobi river into a safe space.
