Environmental Awareness and Advocacy
MRRN actively creates awareness to the community along the Mathare River on the impacts of degrading the Mathare River ecosystem through liquid and solid waste pollution and land uses that changes or disturbs the channel of the river. We also encourage them to embrace sustainable waste management practices. MRRN also engages the community in various environmental action initiatives so that they can take ownership of the sustainable projects and also change their attitude towards environmental conservation efforts.

Sustainable Waste Management
We ensure that the Solid waste is manager in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner. We ensure that integrated waste management where waste is managed at the source advocating for segregation at the source. We also give incentives to waste pickers for them to bring recyclables to our buy-back centers.
Our aim is to ensure that zero waste reaches the river and no illegal dumpsites are in our areas. We also prioritize empowerment of the youths where they can help manage waste sustainably as their source of income.

Internship and Mentorship programs
MRRN partners with various Institutions such as the University of Frasier Valley in Canada, United Kingdom based Universities and Kenyan Universities in offering relevant internship programs. Individual researchers and institutions are also mentored on improving their research if it is connected to our area of action.

Football for Plastic League
The main goal is to use the popularity and love of football in Kenya to collect and manage plastic waste ranging from hard plastics to flexibles. Each team registers with at least 200kgs of plastic waste and must commit to collect at least one tonne of plastics by the end of the six-month league.

Green Spaces
The network has developed a network of green corridors along the Mathare River, Creating lush, pedestrian-friendly pathways that connect various community hubs and recreational areas. Multi-purpose community parks have been established featuring featuring play equipment, sports facilities and shaded gathering spaces for residents to enjoy.

Mathare River Riparian Mapping
Using our GIS and environmental experts, we regularly map out the channel of Mathare River to take note of any changes. We also map out key areas of environmental concern and grade the level, frequency and timeline of action that is required to effectively address the issue. This has helped us to divert our efforts and resources to areas that requires more action
